I recently stumbled upon the Dalston Oxfam Shop an excellent blog where the author is ripping and uploading music which is nothing new but the author has a slightly different approach. They basically purchase the most interesting looking tapes from the local Oxfam shop in East London rip and upload them. Most of them are commercially avaliable releases, but some are also personalised mixtapes.

There are lots to sift through but my picks so far are Biorhythm 2 and the Honolulu Funk Rock Tape .

The Sound Lab

February 14th, 2009 · No Comments

This Sunday 15/2 there will be a special show dedicated to Australian Dubstep on the Sound Lab on Triple J radio from:

11pm Sydney time 12pm London time

For those who don’t know Triple J is for Australia like the equivalent to BBC radio here in the UK. It’s the first time that a whole show has been dedicated to locally produced Dubstep.

There will be a panel of speakers including Bec Paton who produced a guest mix for us back in June last year , Kristy Brown from Sub Continental Dub and producer Westernsynthetics. Lots of unreleased tracks from producers all over Australia will be played as well as an exclusive live 30 minute mix from Westernsynthetics.

If you miss it don’t fear it will be available as a stream on the Sound Lab page for a week after the 15/2/09.

The fact the Triple J is taking notice of the local sound and is willing to dedicate a whole show to Australian Dubstep is a big plus for the local scene.

This is Episode 32 and not too long ago marked the 2 year anniversary of the first radio waves from space podcast. There has been a little break since the last episode. Not because Im slacking, mainly because Ive been feeling a change for the site and working out where we go from here.

One of the reasons I started radio waves from space was because at the time Id lost the passion for searching for new music and I thought that id throw some of my blends out online to see what response id get. To my delighted surprise people were listening and Ive enjoyed recieving the encouraging emails from wherever you are in the world.

The first change you’ll notice on the site, is that it s had a bit of a spring clean and redesign. If your reading from the rss feed or on the itunes channel go check it out and let me know what you think. The other change on the site is Ive decided to review and post mp3’s. I know that it won’t be the first blog to do so, but I feel I find so much good fresh music, that it would be physically impossible to compile it all into podcast episodes by one person. You can now also subscribe to site updates via email here.

If your making music, or are involved in a label radio waves from space is always on the lookout for submissions, so feel free to send material our way. The best way to do this is via the dropbox on the right of the main page and throughout the site. Only send stuff that you have the right to do so. Too easy!
If youd like to send CD’s or Records email me on info@thoughtlab.com.au and I’ll sort you out with a postal address.

I am excited to bring the next guest mix by DJ Frank, who spent 3 years in Guinea, West Africa, where he travelled to various other countries in the region, namely Sierra Leone, Ghana and Benin digging for vintage african funk, disco and afrobeat among other things. If your feeling this episode do check out his blog at http://voodoofunk.blogspot.com/ where he has documented his trip and there is a cache of excellent mixes.

If your in New York he holds a regular night, and the next one features the Budos Band check the flyer on his site for details. Below is a trailer for documentry titled Take Me Away Fast about his time there which has been submitted to PBS and Sundance for funding to go into production which I can’t wait to see.
