Im happy to share an excellent guest mix from bec paton. I’ve been bumping this all week on the way to work and love it. This set was recorded as a support for none other than DJ Krush in May. She is a huge fan and managed to surprise mr Krush. ill let her explain….

I play a bit of electronica tinged hip hop and speak a bit of Japanese so it was pretty appropriate to get to support my hero, DJ Krush! At my wedding in February, we walked down the aisle to Dj Krush’s “Final Home” (the piano mix) too so it made it pretty poetic, sorta, too.

Poor Krush was a bit stunned because his support rocked up, was a girl, spoke Japanese and told him enthusiastically about getting hitched to one of his songs, (in Japanese). He was bewildered but stoked. When one of the turntables buggered out, he was cool enough to let me use one of his for the remainder of the set too. After my set, he said my tunes were great, high-fived me and clapped me in front of the crowd. I still feel a little glowy…

He then pulled out an awesome set and was such a generous performer and truly the master.

Im really excited about this documentry about Teo Macero.

info from Play that Teo

Teo Macero is the legendary producer of some of the greatest albums ever recorded. From the Miles Davis masterpiece, Kind of Blue — ranked #12 on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time — to Dave Brubeck’s Time Out, Simon & Garfunkel’s The Graduate soundtrack, and the Original Cast Album of A Chorus Line, Teo has made history with his uncompromising attitude and groundbreaking recording innovations.

With a career spanning over 50 years, including 30 years at Columbia Records, 3000 albums, 99 recordings with Miles Davis, and 25 Gold and Platinum albums, Teo’s discography ranges from Jazz to Classical to Broadway to Rock, and includes Charles Mingus, Thelonious Monk, Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett, Leonard Bernstein, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, The Who, and DJ Logic, among others.

Featuring artist interviews, personal photos, archival footage, never-before-seen recording sessions, and a behind-the-scenes look at the person behind the persona,
PLAY THAT, TEO is a revealing portrait of this prolific, irascible, iconoclastic genius.

ive also really been enjoying the reviews and excellent podcasts from the guys over at bleep 43 some quality electronica right there!

Stay tuned for some new sounds to hit the airwaves shortly … and thanks for all the emails about the show. im chuffed to hear that people are bumping the ‘cast from as far as Turkey, Hong Kong, France and Germany!

peace

One of the most fascinating audio documents from the last decade was no doubt The Conet Project: Recordings from Shortwave Numbers Stations, a four CD set of recordings from mysterious radio transmissions of unknown provenance believed to be secret government communications.

They generally consist of male or female voices in varying languages reading streams of numbers, letters, or even morse code. (Wilco’s popular album, ‘Yankee Hotel Foxtrot’ takes its name from a sample of the set.) ‘Shift Coordinate Points,’ by Dutch composer Esther Venrooy takes these transmissions as its material and inspiration. It will air November 21st, as one of four projects that make up Disturbance, ‘a series of internet radio broadcasts’ curated by Washington DC-based Niels Van Tomme.

Every Wednesday in November a different composition is being broadcast around a sonic or psychological disturbance that affected the artist. All nightly transmissions are being transmitted from art@radio, an o! nline radio station based in Baltimore, Maryland focusing on experimental sonic culture.

Although Venrooy’s is the only one to reference Numbers Stations, all of the projects function as personalized appropriations of this rigidly hermetic system.

Another great guest mix by J. Ben Leonard from flood watch music. His dissection of many a hip hop, funk and jazz record and general music blogging in the last little while (or at least since I found his blog anyway) has compelled me to invite him to compile this guest mix.
Armed only with the theme beautiful technology this is his contribution…

At times I long for the absence of any traces of technology in music, a
stark sound-world of unamplified acoustic guitars, pianos, wind
instruments, drums.

Then I recall the incredible variety of textures
that electronic sounds can produce, and when combined with natural,
acoustic sounds, the sonic palette expands to infinity. This mix
contains elements of my favorite flavors of technology, from the
cumbersome the to the streamlined: awkwardly triggered samples,
disembodied voices, analog synths, dense harmonic colors, the capturing
of an intimate performance, an electric piano leading a crack jazz
band. Hope you enjoy.

“One of my friends got permanent residency on Friday. It shouldn’t be something to celebrate. He was recognised as a refugee from Afganistan three years ago. It’s six years since he saw his family last. It took masses of red tape. But he got it. So it’s a major celebration. Major! Everything else this weekend dropped, replaced by an after dusk feast Auburn-style. And a celebration needs a soundtrack. Musically it’s pretty diverse, but there’s something that connects the entire mix: tone’s dark and gritty; vibe’s optimistic.”

Sometimes I want to take time out from things for a few moments and my ears become tired from all of the music I feed them and at times they want to be soothed with melodies and fragments of sound rearranged in a pleasing order.

This remedy helps me zone out and let my mind relax as much as I can while still being awake. This mix is something to keep the mind active in the twilight hours, or to rejuvinate the headspace to feel fresh and ready for whatever the day or night ahead might surprise you with.

As I mentioned in an earlier post I’ve moved from Sydney to Melbourne not so long ago. Im scrawling the rough draft of this post while standing outside on a midweek morning with an icy chill running through my fingers. Winters in Melbourne are much the same as in Sydney but a bit colder and it seems a lot more rain (which I like).

There is a bit of healthy rivalry between Sydney and Melbourne about which city is better, more cultured, has better nightlife and tourist attractions etc. So on my arrival and after meeting new people, many asked the inevitable question – which is better? I cant answer that question right now I need to digest Melbourne some more, but I suspect my answer will be neither they both have very different qualities that stand on their own.

I had the opportunity to visit Sydney as a tourist for the first time recently to play live at the launch of a compilation of Sydney electronica called – midi in the city. It’s a mixtape compiled by the Sculpter and mixed by Simon Mann.

There is a diverse array of tracks by artists honing their craft in bedroom studios all over town. The party was a success with a solid turnout and a great vibe. I’ve heard that another party and releases are already in the pipeline. Im quite chuffed that they even included one of my tracks!

When I first understood the power a virtual snapshot could trigger a memory of another time, which is the essence of what advertisement and marketing people try to express in the visual media. I understood straightaway the feelings this memory recall can create. A forgotten song plays on the radio that digs up feelings that you the listener associate with driving on a Sunday with your family on holidays from school. It at least triggers the neurons in your brain and invokes a good or bad feeling about that time.

In hindsight I think this is one reason that I gravitated towards the sound collage style of music utilising any and all reference points. I was always about the beats first and then after a few listens the mc’s message would seep through. The late 80’s through to the late 90’s for me produced some timeless classics.

Food for thought.

Ive also added a bit of reading material which can be wordy at times but an interesting read nonetheless titled – Making beats- The art of Sample based hip hop. by Joseph Glenn Schloss

Let me know if your enjoying the reading material, blog posts or music. Feedback always welcomed.

The great people over at melodytrip.com have asked me to review the Melbourne jazz fest for them. So over on spaceport26 we have spent the last 2 weeks in immersed in the jazz venues around Melbourne. Highlights for me so far have been Chick Corea and the Yamandu Costa Trio. You can read the reviews here.

For this episode I thought Id dig out some of my jazz favourites to share with you. Included is some Alice Coltrane Featuring Pharoah Sanders (who I will be seeing perform tonight), some Herbie Hancock including the full version of chameleon and the Mighty Art Blakey and the Jazz messengers track “On the Ginza” from one of my all time favourite jazz albums Ugetsu.
Mid last year a good friend of mine emailed me and asked, “what is IDM?” I became quite animated and started telling him about artists that I have been into since the mid 90’s. Releases like the Artificial Intelligence series from Warp and many of their artists including Aphex twin, Autechre’s early work, Mouse on mars, Squarepusher and Boards of Canada among others.

He was intrigued by this music as he had only read about it at uni.I promised him a mix of some of my favorite IDM tunes, which I totally neglected to produce. Damn slacker!
He did give me some of his reading material for the class, which I will share with you. It is a pdf written by Simon Reynolds titled - Funk Dance Lets Art.

I like Simons writing style, but with no reference point it can be confusing as so many artists are name checked. Some that is still actively producing work today and others that have disappeared into the ether.

Simons book Energy Flash: A Journey Through Rave Music and Dance Culture is a great starting point if you are interested in reliving some of those moments of hedonism or if you are just interested in dance music history in general. Its been a while since I read It and I have a feeling that this may be an excerpt.

The DJ history website also has some more recommendations for music and culture reading.

You can check out more of Simons writing at his blog blissout. He has also been published in many esteemed publications such as Melody Maker and New Musical Express (NME) among others.

The mix included is sprinkled with some new Idm, funk, Hip-hop, and Jazz. I think Ill dust off some of my favourites and create that IDM mix soon enough after all.

Good for a sunday afternoon with the paper or pre golf psych up.

enjoy

Not too long ago I was considering selling my beloved TR808. A relic from the 80’s that just keeps on doing its thing. It has such a distinct sound and I guess a few genres of music would not have happened without it. I can safely assume that everyone has heard the sound at least once.

It has been mentioned in many songs (but possibly not as much as the mpc and sp1200).

I’ve been thinking about doing a retrospective for a while. So the next few episodes will be loosely based around this theme. Feel free to suggest tracks that you think should be included or even come up with your own mix.

Not specifically playing one style I will be including a bit of Miami bass, Techno bass, 80’s Electro, booty bass / ghetto tech, Detroit, along with some other random stuff….actually fuck it…you get the picture… just lots of dope records!

Especially a couple of my favourites electro. Such a misused term can cause confusion. Some people use the term to refer to all electronic music or to the new “electro house” or “new rave”. No we aren’t referring to that definition of electro. I’m talking about performers in the 80’s that rapped about space and mars over a fast jerky futuristic beat and some of the music that followed that was directly influenced by that period. Some of it cheezy, some dark and speculative all fun!

So if your into the new “electro” take a little time to soak in something different.

Suffice to say the trusty drum machine is still in the family.

This man had such a vast output of amazing music and was such a charismatic entertainer. He was rumored to have been very hard on the players in his many lineups, but managed to get the best out of them.

The music has indirectly influenced much of modern music today - disco, rock and of course hip hop. Being the most sampled man in history is no mean feat.

Im going to post a couple of the mans hits and a funky rendition by two australian jazz legends of an familiar christmas tune, from a release that is popular with the digging crowd for the drum break at the start, but nevertheless a great rendition in its own right.

James Brown rocks out during a concert in Shanghai, China, early this year.

Im glad that I had the opportunity to see the man live last year. Rest in peace James Brown.

So much great music at the moment, I’m super impressed with the planet rock cover (I know it sounds bad) on breakout-music, seriously dope…. I was going to hunt down the 7” but now they’ve its been released on a 12” with an additional jazz mix. I think the jazz mix is my pick. Patiently waiting for my copy to arrive.

Check out sound snippets on their myspace page breakout music and the label site here. Apparently Mr. Confuse, Info & Kova had their musician mates play the cover and they meticulously resampled the tiny fragments into this stormer.

Dopeness, as is all the other releases on this label, lots of covers of funk classics and other oddities. This is defiantly one of my favorite labels at the moment.

I’m in Melbourne for a little holiday and am djing at a great little Sunday afternoon shindig called Off Beat at Workshop..

On Sunday December 3rd Workshop again will play host to an afternoon and evening of the finest in downtempo, IDM, ambient, 3/4 and world music sounds. In this sophomore iteration we introduce a couple of new styles to the mix - minimal and instrumental hip-hop.

Workshop is at 413 Elizabeth Street in downtown Melbourne, with access through the A’Beckett side entrance.

… The good news is, there are a handful of artistically minded inkers at work out there, and if you’re gonna spend anywhere from a few hundred to a few grand on something that will be inked into your flesh until you die, well, don’t you want it to be atypical and dynamic and ingenious? Don’t you want something you can look at every day and go, whoa, what the hell is that, and is that really a part of my skin, and isn’t that just the most fascinating thing?

Don’t you want, in other words, a piece by someone like this French guy named Yann? Sure you do. The newish tattoo blog Needled.com pointed me to this guy’s deliriously cool work, which you won’t find in any of the aggro-trashy American tatt mags. He is, apparently, quite the sensation among tattoo cognescenti in France and Europe. Yann’s work is amazing and odd and childish and beautiful and strange, Egon Schiele meets Edward Gorey meets Picasso in a deep closet of folksy childhood whimsy. You gotta check out his gallery here

It is, of course, not a style for everyone. And you’d have to fly all the way to France to get a piece by him. But it could certainly encourage anyone considering the acquisition of serious ink to maybe think beyond your average dolphin-in-a-rainbow. Please. …

Also check out the needled.com blog for all things tattoo

What are your thoughts on the future of electronic music? Do you agree/disagree with the ideas put forth in this article?

While we are on about electronic music lets look back to the past and check out a radio event that has been uploaded on the archive.org website

from the site

“Broadcasted live from the Mills College Electronic Tape Music Center via a remote portable transmitter, Tom Zahuranec’s “Bucket-Ful Mercury Walk” invited listeners at home to drive to Mills and assist in creating sounds using various electronic equipment including Moog and Buchla synthesizers. Guests discovered and experimented with their manipulated voices while others helped turn nobs on the instruments. Charles Amirkhanian reports live from the event where over two hundred people attended, as well as Don Buchla who brought in one of his new model synthesizers of the time. The program features over 45 minutes of analog sounds for listeners to bathe themselves in. From a series of audience participation radio programs in which artists were given air time to create situations that physically involved the listening audience.”

the mp3 is located here

Also pop by disquiet.com for all things ambient. They have a nice selection of daily mp3’s to download, music reviews and other stuff.

For my first entry I wanted to highlight an artist that I have really dug over the years Mr Kirk Degiorgio.

Ive really been revisiting his back catalogue some of which is had to find and thought id share some tunes.

If your not familiar with Kirk he’s been producing music since the early 90’s and who is probably best known for his As One album on Mowax and his short-lived A.R.T. label.

Im a sucker for the feel of his earlier productions. This is from the compilation album objets d’art under the as one guise.
Isatai - As One

Kirk has produced many different genres and through the years has a healthy love of analog modulars, jazzy broken beats and soul but you can feel the sense of refinement within his later work and use of more organic sounds. although I have a soft spot for the Detroit tech lushness.
His later releases have a big jazz/ neo soul influence influence, depending which alias you lean towards and are great to just chill to.

here is a taster of his more jazzy productions.
ups and downs - Kirk Degiorgio

His most recent release is the collaboration with Vocalist Jinadu which was recorded at the legendary abbey road studios. His singing and Kirks soulful music sit together so well. With a guest arrangement from the legendary deodato among others. Its out now on peacefrog, you can purchase from
bleep or from the peacefrog website direct.

Look forward to the release of the new as one album “AS ONE: Planetary Folklore 2 - October 16th 2006″ on Italy’s Archive label. I know I am.

you can find out more about the beauty room and kirk at these links

The beauty room
